On turning 38

by admin on April 28, 2010

1068015_hour_glassTwo days ago, I celebrated my 38th birthday. It was nice enough – cake and ice cream with the family, some thoughtful gifts, and a sweet present from my little guy (well, after his father convinced him that mommy doesn’t want a train tanker car).

But as I always do when I mark another year off on the personal calendar, I started thinking about getting a year older, and what that means. Somehow, I began making these lists in my head*, so I thought I’d share them with you:

Things we didn’t have in elementary school:

  • Bike helmets
  • Seatbelts
  • Personal computers
  • Remote control tvs
  • VCRs
  • Audio tapes
  • Microwave ovens
  • Email
  • Splenda
  • Energy drinks
  • Game consoles

Things we didn’t have in high school:

  • DVDs
  • Facebook
  • MySpace
  • Twitter
  • Snowboarding
  • Digital cameras
  • CD players
  • Google
  • HDTV
  • Flatscreen TVs

Things we didn’t have in college:

  • Cell phones
  • Laptop computers
  • Facebook
  • MP3 players
  • Downloadable music
  • Netflix
  • Kindle
  • Blu-Ray

But it wasn’t all bad. After all, there were….

Things we had in elementary school:

  • Typewriters
  • Video games on cassette
  • Playing outside
  • Public phones
  • Mr. Glueman
  • Ice cream trucks
  • Friends next door
  • Trick-or-treating alone

Things we had in high school:

  • 5.25″ floppies
  • Dress codes in school
  • ONE best friend
  • Roller skating parties
  • Library card catalogues
  • Parties
  • Real live dates (IRL)
  • Detention
  • Getting grounded

Things we had in college:

  • Mix tapes

  • Walkmen
  • Boomboxes
  • Part-time jobs
  • Pagers
  • Shared college dorm phones
  • Watches

All in all, I think we were better off when I was younger, even without the MP3 players, iPhones, and bike helmets. What about you – what did you have as a child thatkids don’t have now, or what DON’T you have now that kids have today?

*thanks to my Twitter friends who helped me think of some things for this list that I’d forgotten!
